Last Sessions Vol. 2The Great Depression, ironically, signaled the end of the blues boom of the 1920s. Tastes changed, and even superstars like Bessie Smith suffered. Although she would live four more years before dying in a 1937 car accident, these recordings from 1933 are Bessie Smith's recorded epitaph. She's still in fine voice here, and the slightly more sophisticated arrangements on tracks like "Gimme A Pigfoot" are tantalizing glimpses of what might have been. |
