An American Rhapsody - Widescreen SubtitleA true story based on the life story of writer/director Eva Gardos, this film depicts the personal odyssey of a family's escape from Communist Hungary. One night, Margaret (Nastassja Kinski) and Peter (Tony Goldwyn) arrange to escape Hungary with their eldest daughter in tow, forcing them to leave behind their youngest, Suzanne, in the care of Margaret's mother. When the mother is separated from the young child, she goes to live in a peaceful Eastern European countryside with a loving man and woman who raise her until age six, where Suzanne is sent for by her birth parents, now living in America. Archives of War: Volume 1 - World War I and the Interwar Years -This is part one of a six-part series that chronicles the history of the wars of the 20th century in which the United States has played a part. Most of the material is presented through vintage black-and-white newsreels, which add an air of immediacy to the information imparted. There is also a presentation of a silent film production from the 1920s, which shows the horrors of trench warfare. The Battle of Ypres is presented at length, and relates the story of the three horrific battles fought near the Belgian town of Ypres. The volume also covers the phenomenon of war neurosis, the rise of the Nazi party, the Spanish Civil War, and the Sino-Japanese War. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide |

Ballad of a Soldier - SubtitleThe award-winning Ballad of a Soldier was the first Russian film to score an American success during the Cold War era. It is a relatively simple, uncomplicated story of a callow young Russian conscript (Vladimir Ivashov) who yearns for home and hearth during World War II. Unfortunately, only those who have committed a conspicuously heroic act are being honored with liberty. Almost in spite of himself, the boy becomes a battlefield hero, and as a result is allowed to visit his family. En route to his home, the boy uses up much of his valuable leave time through his efforts to help others. He finally gets to see his mother for a few precious moments before being called back to active duty. At the risk of sounding snobbish, we advise that you see Ballad of a Soldier in a subtitled print. The English-dubbed version borders on the ridiculous, with everyone talking in stilted sentences that sound like Soviet Damon Runyon. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |
