Johnny "Guitar" Watson's career spanned the second half of the 20th century--he had hits both in the 1950s as a bluesman, and then in the '70s as a reinvented R&B-funk guitarist. This volume of the French Classics R&B label's series of chronological retrospectives gathers examples of the guitarist's early work; some, like "Highway 60" and "No I Can't" are influenced by popular '50s performers like Willie Mabon and Percy Mayfield, while others, like the startling instrumental "Space Guitar," are uniquely Watson's own.
