Finnish director Ilkka Jarvilaturi directs an international cast in this deadpan post-Cold War spy farce. Jaded CIA veteran Harry (Bill Pullman) and young SVR agent Natasha (Irene Jacob) are on-again off-again lovers who have little to do in Helsinki except spy on one another, until a courier (Bruno Kirby) shows up with a porno tape bearing top-secret US satellite codes. Jean Claude Van Damme kicks up his heels once again in this action film. Van Damme plays Kurt Sloane, the brother of American kickboxing champion Eric Sloane (Dennis Alexio). Having bested the best in the United States, Eric takes off to Bangkok with little brother Kurt to defeat the kickboxing champion of Thailand. However, while Eric wins the fight, his career is finished for good when his opponent, the malicious Tong Po (Michel Qissi) breaks his spine after the final bell sounds, putting Eric permanently in a wheelchair. Kurt learns the sport of kickboxing himself, so he can get in the ring and teach the Thai champ a lesson. An old man who is a master at kickboxing, instructs Kurt in the brutal art, along with gentle bromides of Zen philosophy and spiritual peace. Kurt finally becomes a pro and lines up a match with Tong Po, but to insure victory, Tong Po's cohorts rape Kurt's girlfriend, kidnap his crippled brother, and even kill his dog. But Kurt is unbowed and is ready for the champ to meet his match. ~

Sailors in the course of a dangerous mission are confronted with a new kind of terror in this monstrous thriller. The criminal is being transported aboard a heavily guarded submarine, in hopes of foiling any escape attempts, but the sub is forced to pass through "the Devil's Eye," a region at sea where a number of ships have been lost. The submarine's crew soon learns the secret of "the Devil's Eye" when the ship is attacked by a giant, prehistoric octopus. In the confusion, the terrorist escapes to a passenger ship, and the crew must find the fugitive as they fend of the vicious sea creature. Following up on the critical drubbing of the Final Cut, the same cast and crew, TV comedians Dominic Anciano and Ray Burdis, along with Britpack hipsters Jonny Lee Miller, Jude Law, Rhys Ifans, and Sadie Frost, come together to make this crime comedy about guns, karaoke, and fart jokes. The film opens with bored postman Jonny (Lee Miller) in clown-face reminiscing about his mate Jude (Law), who introduced him to his crime lord uncle Ray Kreed (Ray Winstone). Though Jonny is hungry for some action, Ray is more interested in karaoke and his impeding nuptials with soap star Sadie (Frost). Bored, Jonny, along with Jude, bungle a credit card scam and then later really screw up by robbing high-grade blow from a South London gang headed by Sean (Sean Pertwee) and his sidekick Matthew (Ifans). This noir crime drama set in Arizona and updated for post-modern sensibilities is similar in tone to other hip B-movie homages such as Bad Lieutenant (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994) and the previous year's award winning L.A. Confidential (1997). Ray Liotta stars as Phoenix police detective Harry Collins, a good-hearted cop with an understanding bartender (Anjelica Huston) and a gambling problem that's gotten him $32,000 in debt to a bookie, Chicago (Tom Noonan). Although Chicago offers to forgive Harry's debt in exchange for a murder, and Harry's crooked partner Mike (Anthony LaPaglia) offers to kill Chicago, Harry refuses their generosity, insisting that he will never welsh on a bet or betray a friend. Instead, Harry devises a plan to rip off a sleazy loan shark and strip club owner, Louie (Giancarlo Esposito) with the help of Mike and two fellow corrupt cops, James (Daniel Baldwin) and Fred (Jeremy Piven). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
